Definition of an ENFP

ENFP is the acronym used by the Myers-Briggs (MBTI) to describe extroverted people who prefer to use their intuition, feeling, and perceiving cognitive functions to receive information, make decisions, and interact with the outside world.

Extroverts love to be around lots of people and they are friendly, cheerful, and enthusiastic. They are the life of the party and will always be making everyone laugh with their jokes and funny stories.

ENFP characteristics

ENFPs are primarily known for their confidence, optimism, warmth, kindness, empathy, generosity, persuasive nature, and strong communication skills.

Out of all the MBTI personalities, ENFPs are the most unusual. They are fun and frivolous yet serious and contemplative. They are extroverts but need time on their own. They are easy-going but can become bad-tempered when they are stressed.

ENFPs are led by their heart, so they need constant approval from others and can be overly sensitive to criticism. When challenges oppose them, they can lose their confidence and lust for life, but as they are positive, resilient people, they tend to regain their enthusiasm quickly.

Creative and artistic, ENFP famous people are drawn to art, music, literature, and fashion. While they love art for art’s sake, they see art as the perfect opportunity for self-expression. Some famous ENFPs use their creative gifts to draw attention to social issues and challenge people to view the world in a different way.

ENFPs march to the beat of their own drum and they dare to be different. They may shock others with their eccentric lifestyles, wild antics, controversial ideas, and bold fashion choices. ENFPs love to explore new ideas and have new and exciting experiences, which they believe makes life worth living.

ENFP famous people love to be in the spotlight. They are quite happy to talk about themselves or use social media. Unfortunately, their desire for spontaneity may draw the media’s attention for all the wrong reasons. But regardless of negative press, they are still loved by their fans and continue to enjoy successful careers.

Cognitive functions

The intuition preference is essential for famous ENFPs. It helps them to receive information, discern people’s true motivations, work cohesively with others, and create a healthy life/work balance.

Famous ENFPs rely on their feelings to navigate their way through life. Their heightened sensitivity to other people’s feelings helps them to make strong connections with others.

They tend to make decisions based on how they feel at the time, so they can be unpredictable. They also like to consider other people’s feelings so their decision-making can be tentative when their decisions may have a negative impact on others.

Famous ENFPs need to guard their hearts as emotionally motivated decisions may cause them pain, harm their careers, or even ruin their reputations.

Constant media scrutiny and the intense public gaze are challenging for most celebrities, but ENFP people tend to manage their high-profile careers quite well.

Famous ENFPs do value their quiet time, especially if they are writers who need solitude to create stories. The perceiving preference also helps them to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and stay focused on their work.

Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet, playwright, essayist, novelist, poet, and spokesman for aestheticism.

He is one of Ireland’s most celebrated 19th-century writers and is highly regarded for his significant contributions to English Literature.

His most famous works include Ravenna, a seven-part poem, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and his satirical plays about the English Upper Class: Lady Windermere’s Fan, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband, and The Importance of Being Earnest.

Oscar Wilde’s sexuality also dominated the tabloids. Although he married a wealthy English woman, Constance Lloyd, he had an affair with Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie), the third son of the 8th Marquess of Queensberry.

Wilde was convicted of indecent behavior on the 25th of May 1895 and was sent to Pentonville Prison to serve two years of hard labor. His essay, The Battle of Reading Gaol details the harsh conditions.

ENFP characteristics

Oscar Wilde is an excellent example of an ENFP. He was enthusiastic, charming, optimistic, witty, creative, unconventional, flamboyant, and idealistic. He loved art and beauty and was a skilled conversationalist.

While his plays thrilled audiences, not all of his productions were well-received in highly conservative Victorian Britain. His play Salome was banned because it contained Biblical characters which were against the law at the time. Even the “drawings for Salomé were deemed too risqué for publication” and were censored.

The Picture of Dorian Gray was criticized due to its immorality and homoerotic content. Ironically, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a perfect example of “life imitating art”, as Wilde’s relentless pursuit of decadence and pleasure lead to his downfall like the main character.

“Beauty is the only thing that time cannot harm. Philosophies fall away like sand, creeds follow one another, but what is beautiful is a joy for all seasons, a possession for all eternity.”

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

Aldous Huxley

Aldous Huxley was an English writer. He has written nearly 50 books, which include fiction and non-fiction, essays, narratives, and poems.

His most celebrated works are Crome Yellow, Brave New World, Island, Mediation on the Moon, and Along the Road

The dystopian novel Brave New World inspired George Orwell who wrote 1984, another dystopian novel as well as inspiring modern-day filmmakers.

Initially, Huxley wanted to be a physician but when he was 16, he suffered an eye infection that left him nearly blind. He learned to read in Braille, but later recovered some of his sight. For the rest of his life, he had to wear strong glasses. Due to his poor vision, a career in medicine was impossible, so he became a writer.

Huxley also had an inquiring philosophical mind. He explored mysticism and universalism and wrote about these subjects in his comparative study The Perennial Philosophy. His ‘mystical’ experience after using the psychedelic drug mescaline is detailed in The Doors of Perception.

In 1959, he won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award of Merit for Brave New World.

ENFP characteristics

Aldous Huxley is a great example of the ENFP personality. He was charming, enthusiastic, imaginative, creative, inventive, bold, and adventurous.

Not only was Huxley a “brilliant, eclectic” writer and a clever social critic, but he was also a powerful visionary who had an insatiable curiosity about the future. He was aware of the problems in his own time but was able to foresee possible dual trajectories for humankind.

Brave New World presents a “grimly conceived [dystopian] future” where “infants are grown in laboratories, and people are “so conditioned to consumer comforts that they no longer question their leaders”. Island offers a brighter utopian view of a more “benevolent” society, in which ingenuity is harnessed for good rather than evil.  (Heitman, National Endowment for the Humanities, 2015).

While his ideas are fictional, Huxley hoped that his readers and critics would learn from his stories and aspire to build a better, happier world.

“Genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm.”

Disney and his team founded film storyboarding which is still used by filmmakers, television producers, animators, and book illustration.

Among his many awards, Disney has won 22 Oscars, two Golden Globe Special Achievement Awards, and an Emmy Award. He was the first person to be nominated for Academy Awards in six different categories.

ENFP characteristics

He was a talented cartoonist and a master visionary who changed the world of entertainment. He “created one of the world’s most beloved pop icons, Mickey Mouse”, popular cartoons, and theme parks, but his “original plan” for EPCOT, was to build a “perfect futuristic Utopian city” where people would live and work. (Acuna, Business Insider, 2021).

Although he was an ambitious businessman, Walt Disney’s ultimate desire was to bring happiness, joy, and laughter to the world.

ENFP characteristics

Robin Williams is a perfect example of an ENFP. He was social, optimistic, energetic, enthusiastic, inventive, hilariously funny, witty, and clever.
